How We Operate

“I3N represents and an opportunity for investors to mentor and invest in early stage impact enterprises across diverse sectors that aim to create positive social and environmental impact.”

Multi-Pronged Sourcing

We leverage Intellecap, Sankalp, referrals, events, and have own feet on the ground to scout for as many social enterprises as possible. Since January 2012, we have sourced and evaluated over 150 enterprises for investment.

Our screening process usually consists of a first level of conversation with the promoters; followed by an analysis of the business potential and scalability according to the criteria defined here

If our initial criteria are met, the case is presented to our internal IC to further judge the likelihood of a successful fundraise on the network. Once we are satisfied that the enterprise will generate enough interest from members, we begin formally working with the enterprise.

Preparation for Quarterly Showcasing

We often spend 1-2 months working with enterprises providing extensive consultations before showcasing them to members. We spend time questioning their assumptions, refining their projections, as well as rearticulating their pitches. This reduces the initial hand-holding time required from angels, who can then focus on providing more strategic guidance to the entrepreneurs.

We showcase 5 enterprises to our members quarterly in India and biannually in East Africa through an in-person showcase, this gives entrepreneurs a chance to pitch their businesses, answer questions, and build a personal relationship with our members.

If there is interest from the member group on a particular deal, we facilitate the entire transaction process - conversations within the sub-group of interested members, identifying the deal champion, deciding the terms, providing standard documentation, recommending independent service providers for due diligence and legal, and taking the transaction to closure.

While we provide guidance and hand-holding to entrepreneurs on various aspects, we also believe that we need to bridge the knowledge gap from the other end by enabling ongoing education for investors and other stakeholders.

We have institutionalized monthly newsletters to keep up to date with recent deals, events and other happenings in the space. We also run regular knowledge sharing teleseminars where we leverage experts to deep dive into sectors discussing overall state of the sector, regulations, opportunities, challenges, business models, and enterprises operating in the sectors.
